Emergency contraception is a method of preventing pregnancy after sexual intercourse has occurred. This is achieved through the use of certain oral contraceptive tablets that prevent the fertilized egg from implanting in the uterus. Emergency contraception (EC) is most effective if taken as soon as possible and within the first 72 hours after sexual intercourse.
You do not need a prescription for EC. There are two brands of EC available in Canada - Plan B and Norlevo. You can find EC in the family planning section of some pharmacies, but many of them still keep it behind the counter and you will have to ask for it there.
